Flu Season is Coming!

Despite vaccinations being widely available, annually thousands of deaths are attributable to the flu. Getting yourself and your employees vaccinated is one of the most cost-effective clinical preventive services and an important step in providing a healthy workplace.

Routine flu vaccines are one of the most cost-effective clinical preventive services. Still, for most recommended vaccines the adult vaccination coverage remains low and significantly below Healthy People 2020 targets. For example, the HP2020 suggests the pneumococcal vaccination for 60% of the 19-64 years olds with high-risk conditions and 90% for those 65 years or older. The actual estimated pneumococcal vaccination coverage rates for these groups are only 21% (19-64 years) and 60% (65 years).

Therefore, not only would you and your employees be more likely to stay healthy through flu season if they`ve gotten the flu shot upfront but they would both save money too. Employees would be much less likely to miss time from work to visit the doctor in addition to the dip in productive time before and after the illness.

The National Public Health Information Coalition recommends certain vaccines annually based on a person`s age, occupation, or health conditions (such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes or heart disease):

  • Everyone should have their vaccination needs assessed at their doctor’s office, pharmacy, or other visits with health care providers
  • All adults, including pregnant women, should get the influenza (flu) vaccine each year to protect against seasonal flu.
  • Every adult should have one dose of Tdap vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis or whooping cough) if they did not get Tdap as a teen, and then get the Td (tetanus and diphtheria) booster vaccine every 10 years.
  • Pregnant women should receive a Tdap vaccine each time they are pregnant, preferably at 27 through 36 weeks.
  • Adults 60 years and older are recommended to receive the shingles vaccine.
  • Adults 65 and older as well as adults younger than 65 years with certain high-risk are recommended to receive one or more pneumococcal vaccines.
  • Adults may need other vaccines (such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and HPV) depending on their age, occupation, travel, medical conditions, vaccinations they have already received, or other considerations”
